Content of Newsletter in detail…
On some weekends, there seems to be relatively few running events in Cork and then there are weekends where there are loads. Last weekend felt a bit like the latter.
On Sunday the 18th of February, there were four running events in Co Cork. There were 300 finishers in the Carrigaline 5-mile, 186 in the Cloyne 4k, 172 in the Doneraile 5k and 133 in the IMRA trail race in Rahan Woods near Mallow. That's a grand total of 791. In Kerry, there were 203 finishers in the Tralee 10-mile and no doubt, a good few runners from Cork were there as well. Overall, a very busy weekend.
Looking at the calendar, the 3rd and 10th of March look busy as well.
Speaking of calendars, I've had a look at a lot of running calendars around the country over the last few weeks and it's obvious there is no running calendar for the whole of Ireland. Athletics Ireland say that they have the 'Ultimate' calendar but that's just marketing speak. They're only concerned with events that have one of their race permits and they don't list any of the BHAA or IMRA events as well as all of the other running events that don't need or want a permit.
The chip timing companies are only concerned with the events they are doing the timing for. There are others as well but they have loads of mistakes. The simple fact is that an all Ireland running calendar requires a huge amount of time and maintenance and no-one is going to do it.

Weekend Weather: For the third weekend in a row, we have two contrasting days again, However in marked contrast to the two previous weekends, Saturday will be good this time while Sunday in Cork looks wet. On Saturday, we have a ridge of high pressure keeping things nice and dry so it should be green light for the parkruns. On Sunday, there is a low pressure system crossing to the south of Ireland and the rain is never too far away in Cork. If anyone is doing the Kinsale 10-mile then expect a strong easterly headwind in the second half.
Weekend events: Other than the parkruns on Saturday, there is an IMRA trail half-marathon near Clonmel which should be a good one considering the nice weather forecast. On Sunday, there is the annual Kinsale 10-mile as well as the Adare 10k. Expect wind & rain.
There is a selection of events on offer elsewhere as well. As always, see the event calendar... https://corkrunning.blogspot.com/p/calendar.html
Parkrun News:
Haulbowline Island junior parkrun... The new 2km junior parkrun in Haulbowline Park near Ringaskiddy seems to doing very well and it's getting reasonable numbers every week. The numbers for events #1-5 were 122, 81, 113, 83 & 69. Like all junior parkruns, they need more volunteers and people to help out.
Last weekend... Last week at parkrun in Ireland, there were...136 events & 14,217 walkers, joggers, runners and volunteers.
Race News:
Banteer 5-mile: Mt Hillary AC have said that they now have fewer than 20 buffs/snoods left for their Banteer 5-mile coming up on Sunday 10th March. If you're interested then enter asap. They're also looking for race stewards for the race so give them a shout if you can help out... Liam Murphy at (087) 9318982.
Cork BHAA MTU 5k: MTU recently marked the launch of it’s Ditch the Disposables campaign across all MTU campuses. This involves removing single-use cups from all canteens as part of it’s commitment to environmental sustainability. They are therefore asking runners to bring their own reusable cup for refreshments after the race on the 3rd of March.
Kerry Way Ultra Accommodation: The Kerry Way Ultra is coming up on the 6th & 7th of September 2024. The organisers have alerted participants to the fact that there is a large cycling event being held in the Killarney/Kenmare area on the same weekend with over 3,000 participants expected. They recommend that Kerry Way participants get their accommodation sorted ASAP.
Belfast Marathon sells out: The organisers of the 2024 Belfast City Marathon have announced that it has sold out. The 42.2 kmn event which is coming up on the 5th of May has hit a record 5,500 entries.
Naas 10-mile sells out: The organisers of the Naas 10-mile road race has now sold out. This 10-miler in Co. Kildare is due to be held on Sunday 3rd March and it had a limit of 600 entries.
Help wanted for Cobh: The organisers of the Sonia O'Sullivan Cobh 10-mile road race on Sunday, April 7th are looking for stewards to help out. If you can help in anyway, please contact ballymorecobhac AT gmail DOT com
